POMVIA
An apple dessert wine modelled on sherry, from Koenekes Hofladen in Heeslingen: apple wine from old orchard meadows, fortified with the farm's own apple brandy and aged for four years in a red-wine cask of French oak. The name tells the story, POM for apple, VIA for the way.
What sets this product apart
It begins with old northern German apple varieties such as Knebusch and Kaiser Wilhelm, harvested by hand and pressed into juice. The farm ferments the juice into apple wine and fortifies it with its own fruit brandy. Then it matures for four years in the cask store, in a red-wine cask of French oak. Over that time fruit sugar, acidity & alcohol come together: in the glass, POMVIA shows its fruity character and the many-layered apple aromas of the orchard meadows.
Koenekes Hofladen lies in Heeslingen, a village more than 1,000 years old between Hamburg and Bremen. Old fruit trees have always been part of the farmstead; when the farm set up its own juice press in 2010, it extended its orchard meadows further. Alongside contract pressing and numerous apple juice blends came the idea of making better use of the old meadows: sherry provided the inspiration for the cask-aged apple wine, a rarity in the flat lands of northern Germany.
Innovative apple-based product following a French model.
Lovely idea, attractive bottle.
