Moorwasser - 32 %vol
A mild liqueur from the Emsland: the Edelkorn-Brennerei Jos. Rosche in Haselünne combines its own in-house wheat distillate with delicate herbal aromatics and a surprising note of coffee on the finish. “Moorwasser” (moor water) has been a registered word mark of the house for decades.
What sets this product apart
Rosche distils the base itself: the wheat grows on its own fields, the distillery mashes and distils in house, and no bought-in industrial alcohol goes into the bottle. On the nose, Moorwasser shows roasted aromas, peppermint, juniper & ginger, alongside the sweetness of chocolate, nougat & dark caramel. On the palate: plenty of chocolate, coffee, gingerbread & a hint of cinnamon, hardly any bitterness, but a dense, compact body.
The name tells of its origins: the Emsland was long a poor region of moor and geest, sandy heathland, and today Moorwasser stands for the hard-won development of this region in the west of Lower Saxony. Rosche has been distilling in Haselünne since 1792, where “Brandwein”, distilled spirits, is documented as far back as 1524; the family business began in 1703 as a windmill with an agricultural goods trade. Haselünner Korn carries the EU seal of protected geographical indication, and since 1996 the house's own Korn-Academie has passed on the knowledge surrounding this grain spirit.
